Lead Lighting Artist



Deep Silver Volition needs an experienced Lighting Artist to build and lead a lighting team! This is a fantastic opportunity to guide the visual quality and style of our future games!

The Lead Lighting Artist has an important role to play in the quality and style of our games. In this role, you’ll define our projects’ use of color to support the narrative, gameplay, and artistic direction defined by the Project Art Director. You’ll contribute to nearly every area of our visuals, including the world, cinematics and missions. You should have an understanding of technical limitations, including memory and frametime budgets, and you should have a deep understanding of the production demands of a large AAA game. This position requires an understanding of modern real-time lighting techniques and an eye for artistic excellence. The ideal candidate has deep knowledge of cinematography, color theory, storytelling, and the physical qualities of light.


  • Develop and nurture a successful lighting team
  • Closely partner with production on planning of all lighting content
  • Review work done by the lighting team, promoting a healthy culture of critique
  • Support our games’ gameplay, narrative, and art direction with use of color, atmospherics, and practical lighting solutions
  • Prioritize and assign the work of the lighting team, ensuring that it is delivered in a timely manner
  • Ensure all project lighting needs are fulfilled
  • Develop and be a champion for lighting’s contribution to the overall artistic vision for the project
  • Maintain a balance between visual quality and performance requirements
  • Work closely with our Core Technology Group to evolve our rendering features and tools as they relate to lighting in our proprietary real-time lighting engine


  • 5+ Years of video game lighting experience
  • Working knowledge of modern lighting techniques in video games
  • Knowledge of physically-based materials and shaders
  • Knowledge of color space
  • Understanding of the open-world experience
  • Experience with Max/Maya, Photoshop, and other 3rd party software used in lighting
  • Experience in color grading and other post-processing
  • Self-motivated and has the ability to solve problems
  • Highly organized with the ability to adhere to production schedules
  • Well-developed communication skills and strong work ethic
  • A strong understanding of color theory and the influences of lighting on mood and story
  • A strong grasp of the fundamentals of cinematography
  • Candidate must submit an online portfolio to be considered


  • AAA development experience
  • Experience in a lead position
  • Training in traditional art mediums (painting or photography)
  • Experience with current real-time game lighting technology
  • Experience with lighting using a Physically Based Renderer
